  3. Scholarships and bursaries are an integral part of the student finance system, withoutessential whichfor enabling motivated and outstandinghigh-achieving individualsstudents couldwho may not be able to afford a university education.
  4. The University of Alberta should not only aim to attractrecruit talentedmore students, but demonstrate a commitment to realizing the full potential of current undergraduate students.students and supporting them.
  5. Financial needneeds canaffect be detrimental tostudents' academic performance and engagement in extracurricular student achievementachievements by diverting student focus and effort totowards employment.
  6. The current scholarship and bursaries applications process is inefficientinefficient, complicated and time consuming.consuming, posing additional challenges for students.

 

Resolutions

  1. The Students’ Union shall lobby the University of Alberta to increase both the number and value of awards granted to continuing undergraduate students in order to be consistent with the number and value of entrance awards.
  2. The Students’ Union shall lobby the University of Alberta and the Government of Alberta to increase the relative and absolute amounts of scholarships and bursaries that are awardedawarded, prioritizing financial need and/or student involvement. based on the students’ financial need and/or involvement.
  3. The Students’ Union pursuewill advocate for the implementation of a singleunified pointapplication ofportal entryfor toscholarships and bursaries, simplifying the scholarshipapplication process and bursariesenhancing applicationaccessibility process.for all students.
  4. The Students’ Union shall advocate that the University of Alberta and the Government of Alberta provide awards of merit based on leadership and community involvement, as well as scholarships based on academics.
